GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE PROUDLY ANNOUNCES
THE RETURN OF RENOWNED ITALIAN COMEDIAN ENNIO
Los Angeles, CA – May 5,
2003 – Gilbert Cates, Producing
Director at the Geffen Playhouse, proudly announces the return of genius
comedic performer, Ennio Marchetto. Back by popular demand – Ennio, the internationally renowned, original quick-change artist – will be performing at
Geffen Playhouse for a limited summertime run. EnnioÕs one-man tour-de-force will
feature an updated repertoire of his hilarious, ever-morphing musical parodies
and ingenious paper costumes. EnnioÕs one-week special
engagement runs from Tuesday, July 29 through Sunday, August 3, with an
official press opening on Wednesday, July 30 at 7:30 p.m.

EnnioÕs performance, which features a succession of parodies of pop culture icons set to a vivacious soundtrack, has been lauded in The New York Times as "an absolute hoot."
Ennio was born and raised in
Venice, Italy, and began his illustrious performance career developing costumes
for the Venice Carnivale. His
ingenious paper costumes became an instant local success and soon after, Ennio
began studying at ItalyÕs legendary Scuola DellÕ Arte. In 1988, Ennio exploded
onto the arts scene, taking first prize in BolognaÕs comedic festival, ÒLa
Zanzara DÕOro.Ó His award
nominations include 'The Best Entertainment Award' of Lawrence Olivier Awards
and the Broadway authority 'Drama Desk Award.'
EnnioÕs co-director and designer,
Sosthen Hennekam,
provides both technical and artistic input, bringing life to EnnioÕs
characters and routines. Hennekam studied costume and fashion design in Paris,
where he worked for Jean Paul Gaultier among other prestigious designers. Hennekam began working with Ennio in
1989 and since then the two have collaborated on EnnioÕs visually dynamic
performances all around the world.
Single ticket prices for Ennio range from $35 to $44. Tickets for children 12 years of age and under will be sold for $20 subject to availability. Tickets for Ennio will go on sale beginning Monday, May 5. Ennio will follow the West Coast premiere of Tony Award-winner Richard NelsonÕs coming-of-age play, FrannyÕs Way, closing-out the 2002-2003 season at the Geffen Playhouse.
The 2003-2004 season at the Geffen Playhouse will open with the West Coast premiere of Stephen JeffreysÕ I Just Stopped By to See the Man (September 9 – October 19, 2003), directed by Geffen Artistic Director Randall Arney, followed by the Los Angeles premiere of Sugar Plum Fairy (November 11-December 21, 2003), written and performed by Sandra Tsing Loh and directed by David Schweizer. The third production of the season is Bryan DavidsonÕs War Music (January 13-February 22, 2004), directed by Jessica Kubzansky. The season continues with the West Coast premiere of The Underpants (March 9-April 18, 2004), by Carl Sternheim, adapted by Steve Martin. The Geffen season closes with a new play, directed by Gil Cates, to be announced at a later date.
